The Fareham Anglo Austro German Society's Oktoberfest was a new event for the band last year and we were pleased to be invited back again this year. The event is basically a buffet dinner/dance for society members (some sporting traditional costume), with the musical duties shared between ourselves and an Ooompah band.

At the start of the evening, the outlook seemed a little bleak - the cornet section was a little under strength and Reg had been taken ill, necessitating a last-minute replacement (thanks Jim). However, a well chosen programme and some inventiveness from the cornets resulted in a successful evening that appeared to be greatly appreciated.

The only stand-up solo spot of the evening was 'Sugar Blues', expertly performed by Ted Read. The audience appeared to enjoy this immensely, with applause and cheers commencing when we were still only a third of the way through! The band finished the evening with a selection of German/Austrian traditional tunes which, unsurprisingly in this context, got the entire hall enthusiastically joining in. After a final, rousing, Radetsky March, our part of the evening was complete. The band then had no choice but to make there way back-stage to devour the huge spread awaiting us. Three cheers to the caterers...
