Anyone who reads these report regularly will have seen previous jottings on our trips to the Titchfield Oktoverfest. The other Titchfield event that we attend, again organised by the Fareham Anglo Austro German Society, is their Karneval evening. Since I've not reported on this one before, I thought I'd make amends, albeit briefly.
The event is actually much the same as their Oktoberfest, but with fancy dress replacing the lederhosen. Characters this year included clowns, jesters, dracula, 'Adam Ant' and, most spectacularly, an entire chain gang. The band, of course, got in the full spirit of the thing by wearing grey jackets and black ties...
As is usual at these events, we played two spots. The first included flugel soloist Alison Beaumont playing "I don't know how to love Him". For our second half, the featured soloist was tenor horn player Ian Wild's rendition of "Over The Rainbow". Appropriately, the evening finished with a selection of the German-style tunes that are particularly appreciated by this audience - this year with added percussion, courtesey of the 'chain gang' finding a new use for their shackles! With Jayne not being available, Ted Read swapped his cornet for the baton on this occasion.
